You should be able to get a basic refrigerator at Best Buy for around 300.00 give or take a few dollars. I'd never repair a refrigerator unless it's one of those really, really expensive ones. But even then I wouldn't repair it if it belongs to the landlord.
Next thing, try the classifieds in the paper or your local thrifty nickel. You can pick up a good used one for a lot less than a new one.
Just Do Not Tip it when you move it, because tipping them once they've been plugged in and running for a while, screws up the compressor. I've seen it happen to friends several times when they changed houses.
I've bought a couple of used refrigerators over the years. And I gave both of them away when I moved because I didn't have room to haul them in the truck, they were still running last time I checked.
Try your local Waterfront Mission store, or the Salvation Army store. You might also find one in a yard sale, or at your local flea market.
Ask about the bent and dent items at appliances stores.
Rental places sell items that have been rented fairly reasonably if you catch them.
Check your yellow pages for a Sears warehouse. They sell stuff at the warehouse that is not advertised. Like if they have one of an item left, or that model is discontinued. And a lot of times the price is cut way down.
I got my son a 389.00 mountain bike for 89.00 at a Sears warehouse. They won't tell you over the phone though, you have to go there and look for yourself.
Outlets for major appliance names have deep discounts.
Have you tried your power company? Where I live you can buy stuff like that from the power company and have the payments added to your power bill.
You can buy items like that at Best Buy and make payments if you have to. I ean if you can't afford to put out a big chunk of money at one time. This close to Christmas they're touting the no interest until 2009 or some such. As long as you don't get something that costs a fortune you may be able to pay it off before they can start charging interest.
Well, those are my two cent's worth. I've learned the hard way how to stretch a dollar, and I can make Lincoln scream for mercy I stretch him so far, LOL.
