What's this? An update!?

Title: Learn to be Lonely Chapter 17/ ?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] chocgood84
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: BtVS Spike/Xander
Disclaimer: Characters in this fic, aside from original characters, are property of ME and Joss Whedon. I’m just playing; I get no reward. Don’t sue, I’m poor.
Warning: Just the standard: Slashfic, with some brief episodes of het sex. Some graphic scenes of violence, sexual situations, and other assorted adult situations.
Author’s Note: This is my latest WIP, and it’s coinciding with my last year of college. I may or may not get to update very frequently – but I have no plans of discontinuing or abandoning it, so if you’re patient – there will be more. Also, this is somewhat AU in the sense that Dawn doesn’t exist, and Adam was never created so the initiative is still around for the time being. Also, a big thank you to the official L2bL beta, [livejournal.com profile] kittypoker1.
Previous parts can be found at my website, or in my Livejournal Memories.

Xander woke, sitting, sweat glistening on his brow and his breaths coming sharp and shallow. The iron-black room was stiflingly hot, and for a moment he thought he would burn to death. Then a cool hand trailed up his bare back, followed by another. Strong arms wound their way around his torso, and a familiar chin came to rest on his shoulder. Like a switch, the effect of the nightmare was clicked off and Xander felt like he could breathe again.

“S’matter, pet?” Spike asked, his voice gravelly and husky against Xander’s ear. “Another bad dream?”

Xander sighed and nodded, not quite able to speak yet. He scrubbed his face with damp hands, as if to wipe the memory of it away. “It wasn’t a scary dream,” he said when he finally found the words. “Not scary, really. Just weird, that’s all.”

“Wanna tell me about it?” Spike’s arms loosened their hold, one hand coming to rest on Xander’s thigh and the other making lazy circles across his back.

“No.” Xander sighed again. “Just want to forget about it and get back to sleep. It’s almost dawn.”

“Okay,” Spike whispered, wrapping his arms around Xander once more and pulling him back down to the bed.

The next week went by quickly. Work had started back up at the Shnockstaff project, all of the permits having finally gone through. It was a big project, a massive six storey complex complete with research facilities, medical labs, offices, and two parking garages, on the outskirts of town. It was the biggest project Xander had ever worked on, and to say he was stressed out would be an understatement. It was supposed to be finished in just under eleven months, and they were already a month behind, having had to wait for materials and permits to get through the red tape.

Xander missed Spike. He’d been spending upwards of fourteen hours a day at the site, when he wasn’t trekking back and forth from the main office to the site for some paperwork or other. Usually, by the time he got to the motel at night he was so exhausted that he could barely speak. After showering away the grime and dust, he typically fell straight into bed. A few nights, Spike hadn’t been there when he went to sleep. Those were the worst nights, when he missed the familiar weight next to him. But, like clockwork, Spike was there in the morning, his arms wrapped tightly around Xander and purring softly in his sleep. Someday I’m going to find out how a vampire who doesn’t need to breathe can snore.

This morning, as Xander was getting ready for work, Spike rolled over and awoke, blinking at the dim light of the bedside lamp. His hair was sticking up like a pile of bleach blonde leaves. For just a second, Xander had to stop and catch his breath. His blue eyes were so dark, so big in the dingy light. The bed sheets were tangled around his waist, showing his bare chest. And Spike was smiling at him. Would he hate it if I told him how beautiful he is? Xander had thought.

“Penny for ‘em?” Spike had asked, his voice thick as molasses.

Xander shrugged. “Just thinking how much I’d rather stay in bed with you all day than go to work.”

“That could be arranged…” Spike’s smile transformed into a smirk.

“If only,” Xander sighed, patting his pockets for keys and wallet and grabbing his jacket off the back of the avocado-colored velvet chair. He paused as he made his way to the door and turned back. Leaning down, he kissed Spike. It was nearly impossible to pull away, but, after a minute, he found the courage. “Alright, I gotta go. Need to make some money if we’re ever going to get out of this dump.”

“Xander, if you need money –” Spike tried, but was cut off by Xander’s lips against his.

“No. I can do it.” Xander insisted, pulling back and slipping his coat on. “See you when I get home, maybe?”

“Maybe,” Spike smiled, falling back on the pillows and throwing the covers over his head.

Yeah, Xander thought, I could definitely get used to that…if I haven’t already.

He was currently on his sixth trip back to the site from the office. The first week or so always went like this. One day, he’d hire an assistant to do this leg work for him. But for now, here he was, driving the rusty rumbling company truck through town. He had the windows rolled down, and it was a nice cool breeze blowing across his face and through his hair. Some country song was playing on the radio, an old one he remembered hearing when he was a kid. The sun was beating down through the windshield. Yep, life is good.

On cue, his cell phone started vibrating in his pocket. Rolling his eyes, he dug into his jeans for it and, without checking the ID, clicked it on.

“Yellow,” he called over the wind and radio, “Harris speaking.”

“We need to talk,” Willow insisted from the other side.

Shit.

“Hey, Willow! I’m doing fine, and you?” Xander snarked.

“I’m serious, Xander.” She sounded pissed off.

“Okay, alright, Will.” Xander’s good mood just blew out the open window. “What’s up?”

“Not right now. Can you come to Buffy’s house after work?”

“Uh, actually…” The last thing he wanted to do after a fourteen hour shift was get reamed by a pissy witch. But he could feel the look coming at him through the phone, and decided he would risk the weariness rather than injury or death. He sighed. “It’ll be late, but yeah, I’ll be there.”

“Good,” Willow chimed in her normal chipper voice, and she clicked off.

“Great,” Xander growled, punching the buttons on the radio until it settled into an alternative rock station where it sounded like someone was getting murdered to the beat of drums.

First of all, love the new layout. It's gorgeous!! Great quotes, all of them.

Second of all, SQUEEEEEEEEEEE for a new chapter!! ^_^ I'm worried about Xander and what he'll face with Willow. She's up to no good, I know it. She's SERIOUSLY pissed. Go back to Spike! You're safer there, Xander. Trust me.

LOVED the little bit of romance and caring that Spike showed when Xander woke up. Wonderful and tender.

Great chapter sweetie! (Sorry about the Monday; I know how that feels. *sends hugs*)

Sleepy, leafy-headed Spike is beautiful. *g*

And me thinks Willow is out to cause trouble... again.

*waits for the confrontation*

Ooh, busted!
I don't know if I've commented before 'cause I was reading this at your website. Love the gradually developing feelings between Spike and Xan, and the fact that Willow reminds me a lot of one of my friends. If you don't answer the phone, she calls, and calls, and calls, and calls... Then you get off work and check your phone and think "christ, woman! don't you have something else to do?"

Is it okay if I friend you so when you update it's delivered right to my flist? It'd make me very happy :)

Oh, I have to comment on your Spike's response to "Let's go party like it's 1999" a few parts ago. *So* funny, every time I read it.
