Drabble

Xander woke to an incessant drilling in his ear. Groggy and stiff with not enough sleep, he slapped the alarm clock with a vengeance, only to find that it was innocent. The drilling stopped abruptly, and Xander realized it was the phone. Too late; he heard the machine pick up, the electronic version of his voice asking the caller to leave a message.

He made his way to the living room and pressed “Play”, wincing at the high pitched tone that began the message. Tears flowed freely at the recognition of the voice.

“Xander, pet? So sorry…” Xander pressed “Delete”.
