I'd check out local rescues. There are always a ton of Labrador Retrievers in purebred rescue so you have many, many, many to choose from: http://www.cilra.org/ ("CILRA has taken in a litter of 7 black Lab puppies, aka The Paoli Pups. Both of the parents are Labs. They are healthy, happy and ready to go to their new homes. We have 6 females. These guys are big, fluffy pups." I WANT ONE! http://www.cilra.org/) (Sorry; I always have to proselytize about breed rescue since we had such an awesome experience with it.)
I like breed rescue because you get the perks of buying a purebred dog but for a lot less money (the donation the IG rescue asked for was $250 each for our guys), and you're helping out with pet overpopulation &c. OK, I'll shut up now.
We want a house so bad too. Too bad we could afford a down payment of approximately fifteen bucks and some old comic books. We'll be renting for a while, still, but I yearn for a yard. And some damn privacy.
(Oh, and if your parents are peeved that you waited till after the move to fill them in you can always play innocent--"I didn't want you guys to worry or get stressed out!")
