“Spike?” Xander called into the darkness, afraid of the silence he felt.
“M’here, love. Alright?” Spike answered, his voice as calming as a summer breeze. He pulled Xander close to him, his arms wrapping tightly around the human. Xander shivered at the touch, teeth chattering. Tears, drops at first and then a mighty stream, flowed freely from him.
“S’matter, pet? Love?”
“What’s wrong with me, Spike?” Xander began sobbing, letting everything go. “Why am I so empty? Why am I…” He tapered off, his sobs stealing the breath from him.
Spike only sighed, tears welling, pulling his human closer still.
