So last night was my first event for work. They weren't kidding when they said 8-10 hours on your feet. I actually have a *blister* on my heel. *grumble* I'm thinking that this job would be much better in the winter when it's not 1000+ degrees outside.
Actually it wasn't bad. Last night was a Robotics conference, and you couldn't have asked for a more stereotypical bunch of scientists. heh. Lots of pocket protectors and bald men with glasses and horrible outifts. But also a bunch of really cute up-and-comer geniuses. The event was at the Adler Planetarium, which as my coworkers say, is 'Ground Zero'. Seems they start all the new people out there, and it's supposedly the worst, hardest place to do an event. Because of the way its set-up, we have to turn their cafe into a conference hall, i.e. move all the condiment stations and tables and chairs and cooking equipment out, not to mention move *walls* to make enough room for a dining room, kitchen, cocktail lounge, and speaking area. And then we have to actually put on the cater waiter show. And after all that, we have to clean up and move our stuff out, and then put everything back the way it was.
They had me passing beverages during cocktail hour (wine, beer, water, soda, etc.), and then clearing (taking their empy glasses/bottles). I almost dropped my tray about 4 times, but didn't! During dinner, I was on a shorthanded sweep team - which basically means that everyone on my team had to clear and deliver three plates per table, as opposed to the normal two. I dropped four knives and knocked over an empty glass, but again - didn't drop anything really big!
I guess I don't hate it - it's just a lot more *doing* than I've ever done for a job before. Just going to take a while to get used to it and get into the swing of things. I can't turn down the job, though. It's *good* money. I worked 8 hours yesterday, and that's 1/6th of next month's rent right there. Technically, if I worked three days a week every week, I could live perfectly comfortably. Now I need to call in and see if they want me for another event.
As a sidenote - This whole not having my own internet thing is driving me mad. I really really miss being able to read up on all of you without someone standing over my shoulder and growling at me to hurry up. At this point, I have no clue how long it'll take to get back online:(
